Inspiring the next generation of road safety

Student-led road safety educational program in Maryland raises awareness on the dangers of distracted driving.

Our commitment to road safety take took an exciting international turn with our ongoing partnership with re:act, an innovative Australian road safety organization. For three years, his collaboration empowers design students to develop creative campaigns that will resonate with their peers, to raise awareness of critical roadway safety challenges.

In 2022, re:act launched its first U.S. campaign at the University of Maryland (UMD). Students were challenged to create a campaign targeting drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The powerful message? We all share the responsibility for keeping each other safe on the road. The winning campaign, "We Are All Going Somewhere" by UMD student Madison Beakes, is now displayed on billboards across Maryland, reminding drivers to stay alert and share the road responsibly.

The partnership continued in 2023 with the launch of a second campaign, "Distractions Delay Reactions," reaching even more Maryland drivers through impactful billboard messaging.

Erika Spissu, Director of Travel Behavior at re:act U.S. program partner Transurban North America, said:

“Partnering in the re:act program reflects Transurban’s purpose in strengthening communities through transport. Like Transurban, re:act relies on the USDOT’s Safe System approach to address and mitigate the risk of serious road crash injuries. Transurban is proud to support re:act’s student-led road safety educational program. re:act participants’ campaigns reach drivers in fresh, creative ways and help us deliver on commitment to getting people where they need to go safely.”

We’re proud to support re:act's student-led educational programs. These fresh, creative campaigns reach drivers in a compelling way, helping us fulfill our commitment to getting everyone to their destinations safely. This collaboration between Transurban, re:act, and UMD is a leading example of how creative thinking and student engagement can foster a safer driving culture.
